A principal engineer uses technical and administrative skills to oversee and complete engineering projects. Performs advanced engineering tasks or other special projects requiring original concepts and an extensive experience and expertise necessary for the operation of the voice, video, and data. Principal Engineers is responsible for overseeing production technology testing/interoperation, automation, new technology integration and scale. Develops and implements infrastructure automation process and procedure that can be replicated and scale to deliver our services. Develops meaningful business continuity plans and methods for protection and recovery of infrastructure. Implements procedures that will enable critical infrastructure to recover in the event of a disaster or disruption.


Has a management skill for facilitation of team actions for problem solving including conflict resolution to assure progress. Generally works with wide latitude for autonomous action or decision. Management responsibilities include coordinating the activities of the design project staff which can include resolving engineering design and test problems, evaluating and approving changes and specifications.


As the lead or senior engineer of engineering projects, this occupation conceptualizes the initial implementation design specifications for each project. This involves working with other departments within an organization to establish user or customer requirements, project costs and resources. Along with the initial design of the project, a principal engineer also works on the design throughout the project. Understands product development cycle and practices with hands-on experience in building and verifying designs. Performs designs related to products and systems including development of new products or updates to existing products. Coordinates with equipment vendors to ensure hardware and software meet requirements for testing and deployment. Reviews and modifies vendor design and architecture to ensure digital video systems meet technical and business requirements. This individual will also be integral to support the key functions of the Infrastructure Engineering organization to maintain, operate and optimize key infrastructure components. The Principal Engineer must have the ability to understand how technical solution/design contributes to the company financial aspects – capital and expense. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor or Master Degree in engineering or related field, or related technical experience
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience Cable/Telecommunications Technical Experience                             
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience Telecommunications Network Experience            
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience with a specific area of expertise – voice, video and networking
  • Knowledge of network design, network architecture, protocols and network topology 
  • Knowledge of cable television products and services
  • Knowledge of digital Conditional Access (CA) systems and encryption
  • Knowledge of CPE, including digital set-tops middleware and applications
  • Knowledge of IPv4 and IPv6, IP routing, Ethernet and Transport protocols
  • Knowledge of interactive video systems including applications such as VOD
  • Knowledge of data and voice communications networks
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Data Communications networks, IP technology
  • Knowledge of protocol analyzers; practical skills to use and interpret decoding
  • Knowledge of a scripting, programming or automating language
  • Knowledge of Network and Systems Security
  • Knowledge of digital video service offerings (VOD, iTV, HDTV, DVR) a plus. Knowledge of RF and Digital Video signals (MPEG and AC-3)
